The outline of a car | Gunther KiaThese days, most cars have several engine options. The base engine typically emphasizes fuel economy, while larger, more expensive engines emphasize power. You’ll hear a whole range of opinions about horsepower, but ultimately it’s important to buy the right vehicle for you. Learn how much horsepower you need and how much you’ll enjoy the most.

Under 100 Horsepower

You’ll generally find this level of power only in small subcompact cars like the Smart Fortwo. No current or recent Kia models have horsepower at this level. These vehicles usually don’t drive on major highways, but they do serve as efficient neighborhood transport.

Under 200 Horsepower

Horsepower is undeniably attractive, and these days even the most basic vehicles have the horsepower necessary to pass most vehicles on the highway. As such, horsepower under 200 can be quite good. This level is sufficient for drivers who don’t actively seek road thrills.

Compact and subcompact family vehicles in this range are more likely to be quieter at higher RPM, which can be vital for sleeping passengers. The 2016 Soul base model has 130 horsepower. With a curb weight of just over 2,700 pounds, this model feels like a perfect fit and has the silent cabin of a VIP limo.

Under 300 Horsepower

For the average sedan, horsepower between 200 and 300 will offer much more potential under the gas pedal. Depending on your personal tastes, this feeling of power can be ideal. Models like the 2016 Kia Cadenza start on the high end, with horsepower close to 300. As one of the most luxurious Kia vehicles, the Cadenza intentionally aims for more power. The affordable 2016 Kia Optima starts at 185 horsepower, with higher trim levels offering 245 horsepower.

Right between 200 and 300 horsepower is the sweet spot for many drivers. Be cautious with models that approach 300 horsepower, unless the vehicle is a heavy truck or another large model.

Over 300 Horsepower

This is a tipping point of sorts. Once you take a car of any type and give it 300 horsepower or more, you’ll know instantly whether or not it’s for you. For example, Kia K900 models range from 315 to 420 horsepower. Even though this is a full-size vehicle, it boasts enough power to make it feel much lighter and more agile.

If you do find yourself appreciating vehicles that exceed 300 horsepower, do your homework and take a few test drives. Be sure you know what you’re getting into before you get behind the wheel of more powerful cars or trucks. Try to resist the impulse to buy the sportiest and most powerful vehicle out there if it won’t suit your driving style or needs.

If you’re still new to driving or just haven’t ever ventured very far beyond the horsepower range you’re used to, a little experimentation won’t hurt. If you’d like to test drive any Kia models, contact Gunther Kia, and we’ll schedule a time and day that works for you. We hope to see you soon.
