Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida | Gunther KiaFort Lauderdale is a city full of opportunities to get some fresh air, learn about Florida’s history and wildlife, and celebrate during a local festival. Known as the “Venice of America” because of its numerous navigable waterways, Fort Lauderdale has a unique charm and its own culture. Here are some of the best activities and things to do in and near the downtown area.

Unwind on Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk

One of the most popular things to do downtown is to stroll the Riverwalk, which stretches alongside the Tarpon River. The scenery is amazing, and there are several restaurants, historic buildings, and attractions along the way. There’s a free trolley service to help you get around.

The Riverwalk also hosts numerous events throughout the year. The annual Mutts & Martinis (an outdoor and pet-friendly cocktail party) is a lively celebration, and the Stone Crab & Seafood Festival is a must-attend function if you’re in town.

Visit Fort Lauderdale Beach

This part of the country boasts pleasant weather all year, so you’ll likely want to hit the water during your trip. Fort Lauderdale Beach is a recommended choice if you want to see the Atlantic while avoiding rowdy crowds. Several parks and beaches are adjacent to the downtown area off of E. Las Olas Blvd.

The shoreline promenade along Fort Lauderdale Beach provides dining and shopping opportunities. Dania Beach and Hillsboro Beach are also good choices if you want a more secluded experience. Bring some change to pay for the metered parking (approximately $1 per hour).

Learn Something New at the Museum of Discovery and Science

The Museum of Discovery and Science on SW 2nd St. hosts interactive exhibits and provides fun for people of all ages. There’s an on-site IMAX theater showing box office movies as well as educational films, such as “Incredible Predators 3D” and “Amazon Adventure 3D.” Check out the Living in the Everglades exhibit for a look at life in the nearby Florida Everglades.

Book an Airboat Tour

After learning about some of the local flora and fauna, schedule an airboat tour to see some of it in person. You can book with Fort Lauderdale Airboat Tours out of the downtown area and then take a trip to Sawgrass Recreation Park for sightseeing in the Everglades. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is another recommendation if you want to hike and take in South Florida’s nature.

Attend the International Boat Show

Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capital of the world. During the annual International Boat Show, you can see several types of watercraft and attend a seminar or class on subjects such as basic docking and open water boat handling. If the open ocean is calling you after attending the show, take a day cruise leaving from Port Everglades. This is the home port of some of Royal Caribbean’s largest ships, but you can find smaller yachts or book a charter to go deep sea fishing or tour the Atlantic off of Fort Lauderdale’s beaches.

With so many things to do, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent place to visit just north of Miami. Remember these top five attractions the next time you’re in the downtown area.
